The Sims 4 toddler skills guide

Toddlers arrived a few years ago now in The Sims 4, in 2017 to be exact. Since then, they've taken the spotlight from infants, who unlock a whole host of interactions and gameplay related to early childhood, but toddlers are not to be outdone.

We talked about it at the time of our discovering toddlers in The Sims 4 With the new Sims, toddlers come of course with the return of the potty for their little needs, with toys for resting between two naps... but also with a few interactions for the skills dedicated to them! There are 5 skills reserved for this age group, as adult Sims can't learn to use the potty... So we put on our best diaper to test out these skills and see what impact they have on our little bambinos!

Before you start, please note that toddler skills are fully linked to child skills. The more you progress, the more the children's skills will already be pre-filled by the Sim's birthday. For example, if you reach level 4 in the Communication skill, the Social skill will automatically be at level 2, with a progress bar already half-filled before the next rung. Handy if you want to create Sims who master all skills.

Movement competence

All toddlers begin by moving around on all fours before climbing onto their two little legs. It's this learning process that is represented by this skill, and by motor skills in general. Each level allows you to go a little further, climb stairs, run, etc...

  • Level 1: Reduced risk of falling while moving around
  • Level 2 : Can climb stairs and squabble with adults
  • Level 3: Accelerated walking speed / Possibility of dancing
  • Level 4: Can run / Can create cube towers
  • Level 5 : Increased success climbing stairs

Pot competence

If I tell you that to learn the Potty skill, you have to use the potty, would you believe me? It's a skill that should learn pretty quickly if you don't forget your toddler in a corner and help him satisfy his needs, in every sense of the word. There are only 3 levels here, and the only thing that unlocks with each level is the increased chance that your toddler will go potty on his own whenever he feels like it, without necessarily needing an adult with him. By level 3, when your little Sim is a potty pro, he won't be using diapers at all!

Competence for toddlers Communication

Another skill carried over from previous installments of the game is communication. In the past, all a Sim had to do was teach a toddler to talk. Today, it's a complete 5-level skill that starts with simple babble and words that don't mean much, and builds up to little Sims who already know almost all the rudiments of simlish.

So you'll have understood that to progress, you need to talk to your toddler. He can also develop the skill on his own in front of a mirror or by watching videos on the tablet.

  • Level 2 : Use visual support cards to learn animal names / Hug or hit other Sims
  • Level 3: Toddlers really start talking at this level / May discuss toys, shout, ask for dessert or say nonsense words.
  • Level 4: Opportunity to discuss favorite animal and tell "knock knock" jokes / Object learning with visual support cards
  • Level 5 : Opportunity to tell a story and discuss dinosaurs

The Reflexion skill

Before becoming an outstanding politician or a great scientist, your toddler will first learn to stack wooden blocks! If you prefer the more "modern" version, you can also leave your little one in front of the "Diversion" tablet, which has a game called SimForms that allows you to progress in this skill.

  • Level 3: Possibility of learning numbers with visual support cards / Improved sleep
  • Level 4: Can ask other Sims "why" / Toddlers no longer splash with toilet water
  • Level 5 : Toddlers sleep through the night / Possibility of learning the alphabet with visual support cards and blocks

The Imagination skill

We finish with the Imagination skill, which is as simple as potty training: all your toddler has to do to progress is play. You'll find everything you need in Purchase Mode, from dollhouses to plush toys...

  • Level 2 : View pictures in books and play with other Sims in the dollhouse
  • Level 3: Toys and stuffed animals can be given names
  • Level 4: Possibility of reading books for toddlers
  • Level 5 : Toddlers can contemplate paintings and other works of art
